Advantages and disadvantages of Sm2Co17 and SmCo5 permanent magnetic materials

Compared with SmCo5, the Sm2Co17 has the following advantages:

1. The content of cobalt and samarium in the formula of Sm2Co17 permanent magnetic material is lower than that of SmCo5 permanent magnetic material, which greatly saves the cost of raw materials. Because samarium and cobalt raw materials are relatively expensive rare metals, so the price of Sm2Co17 permanent magnet material is lower than that of SmCo5;

2. The magnetic induction temperature coefficient of Sm2Co17 permanent magnetic material is about -0.02%/℃, it can work in the range of -60~350℃, which is incomparable to SmCo5 permanent magnetic material;

3.Curie temperature is high. The Curie point of the Sm2Co17 material is about 840~870℃, and the Curie point of the SmCo5 material is 750℃. This means that the Sm2Co17 is more resistant to high temperatures than the SmCo5. However, compared with SmCo5 permanent magnetic material, the manufacturing process of Sm2Co17 is more complicated. In order to improve the coercivity, it must be aged for multiple periods of time, and the process cost is higher than that of SmCo5 . In permanent magnet, Sm2Co17 magnetic material is a kind of permanent magnet with potential high service temperature.

Due to the increasing demand for permanent magnets used above 400℃ in aerospace and electronic industries, permanent magnetic materials with high service temperature and excellent comprehensive performance are welcomed by the public. Although the operating temperature of Alnico permanent magnet is above 500℃, its intrinsic coercivity is too low to meet the requirements of practical use. NdFeb rare earth permanent magnet body has high coercivity and good comprehensive performance, but the use temperature can not meet the above requirements, because of the low Curie temperature and large temperature coefficient. Because of its excellent performance, Sm2Co17 permanent magnetic material has been widely used in motor, precision instrument, microwave device, sensor, detector and other high-tech fields.
